The German Football Association announced on Friday the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach of the senior national team on a contract until 2030, in his first ever official role with a national team, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann.

The German Association said on its website: 'Jürgen Klopp will take over as the new head coach of the German men's national team.'

It added: 'The 59-year-old coach signed a four-year contract at the German Football Association headquarters in Frankfurt today, and will lead Germany at Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.'

The German Association had dismissed Julian Nagelsmann (38) from coaching the team after being eliminated in the round of 32 of the World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a 1-0 loss to Paraguay.

Germany has struggled in the last three World Cup editions, exiting the group stage in 2018 and 2022, and has only managed one win in the knockout stages of the last five major tournaments, reaching the quarterfinals at Euro 2024, which it hosted.

Klopp previously had successful coaching stints with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund before taking over at Liverpool in England, where he led them to the Premier League title in 2020, ending a 30-year drought, a year after winning the Champions League.

In January 2024, he announced he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season after nine years with the club, and since January 1, 2025, he has held the position of Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull, overseeing the Austrian company's affiliated clubs.

Klopp will play his first international match with 'Die Mannschaft' during the international break, where he will play four matches: against Netherlands in Amsterdam and Greece in Augsburg on September 24 and 27, and against Serbia in Munich and Greece in Thessaloniki on October 1 and 4.
