The German Football Association announced it has reached an agreement on the key points of a potential contract with Jürgen Klopp to take over as head coach of the German national team, and that both sides are confident of reaching an agreement with Red Bull.

On Friday, talks were held in New York between former Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp and German Football Association president Bernd Neuendorf.

Also attending the meeting was Hans-Joachim Watzke, vice president of the German association, who has a strong relationship with Klopp from their time together at Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp is in the United States where he is working as a TV analyst during the World Cup, but he has already expressed interest in replacing Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after the round of 32 exit against Paraguay.

A statement from the German Football Association about the meeting said: 'During this constructive meeting, an agreement was reached on the key points of a potential contract.'

It added: 'Negotiations will continue next week. Both sides are confident that a final agreement can be reached, provided a settlement is reached with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull.'

The German Football Association statement clarified that the contract's approval requires the consent of the full supervisory board and the relevant bodies within the association.

According to media reports, Jürgen Klopp is expected to sign a contract extending until the 2030 World Cup, with a salary only slightly higher than what Julian Nagelsmann was receiving.

The German newspaper 'Bild' reported that the former Liverpool coach met with Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German association, and his deputy Hans-Joachim Watzke at a hotel near John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.

Photos showed Klopp and his agent Marc Kosicke at the building entrance, along with Neuendorf and Watzke with their luggage. The meeting is said to have lasted more than four hours.

It is worth noting that Klopp is under contract with Red Bull, where he works as Head of Global Football Operations until 2029, but reports have indicated there is a clause in the contract allowing Klopp to leave if the German association calls him.

If the reports are correct, Klopp would leave his position at the energy drink company, but would remain a brand representative. Red Bull owns clubs around the world, including Leipzig and New York Red Bulls.
