Belgian international midfielder Amadou Onana underwent surgery on Tuesday in Lyon to treat a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee, which he suffered during the World Cup, and will consequently be absent from his English club Aston Villa for nine months, according to medical sources.

The 24-year-old player, who previously played for German side Hamburg (2020-2021), French side Lille (2021-2022), and English side Everton (2022-2024), will undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of Aston Villa's medical staff.

Onana suffered a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament twenty minutes into his country's match against co-hosts the United States in the World Cup round of 16 (4-1).

Onana's injury caused great emotion among his teammates, who rushed to console the powerful midfielder immediately after the final whistle against the Americans.
