The Competitions Committee of the Confederation of African Football recommended rejecting the Egyptian proposal to increase the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The Egyptian Football Association, headed by Hani Abu Rida, had confirmed that it had addressed CAF to provide an additional slot for each member association, following African achievements in the 2026 World Cup.

Zamalek and Pyramids will participate in the CAF Champions League, while Al Ahly will appear in the Confederation Cup competitions.

The Moroccan site 'Al Batoul' reported, quoting an official source within the continental federation, that the Competitions Committee recommended CAF reject Abu Rida's proposal.

The source explained: 'The competitions department studied the Egyptian letter immediately upon receipt, which demanded granting each association an additional slot in the two tournaments based on the approved ranking, thereby allowing some associations to increase their quota to three clubs in each tournament from the preliminary rounds.'

He added: 'The Competitions Committee administration submitted an official memorandum, explaining the reasons for its objection to the Egyptian proposal, to CAF Secretary General, Nigerian Samson Adamu.'

He clarified that Adamu contacted Patrice Motsepe, President of the African Football Confederation, to coordinate and finalize the position before the official response to the Egyptian side.

Meanwhile, Egyptian journalist Hani Hathout stated on his Facebook account: 'The Competitions Committee's decision is not final, and the Executive Office of the African Football Confederation has the final say, whether to accept or reject Egypt's request.'

It is worth noting that MAS Fez and RS Berkane will represent Morocco in the CAF Champions League, while Raja will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup.
