Shock for Al Ahly and Raja... Urgent Recommendation to Reject Proposal to Increase African Champions League Clubs
The Competitions Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) recommended rejecting the Egyptian proposal to increase the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Egyptian Football Association, headed by Hani Abou Rida, had confirmed contacting CAF to provide an additional slot for each member association, following African achievements at the 2026 World Cup.
Zamalek and Pyramids will participate in the CAF Champions League, while Al Ahly will feature in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Moroccan website 'Al Batoul' reported, citing an official source within the continental federation, that the Competitions Committee recommended CAF reject Abou Rida's proposal.
The source explained: 'The Competitions Department studied the Egyptian letter as soon as it was received, which requested granting each association an additional slot in both tournaments based on the adopted ranking, allowing some associations to increase their quota to three clubs in each competition from the preliminary rounds.'
He added: 'The Competitions Committee Department submitted a formal memo, explaining the reasons for its reservations about the Egyptian proposal, to the CAF Secretary General, the Nigerian Samson Adamu.'
He noted that Adamu communicated with CAF President Patrice Motsepe to coordinate and finalize the stance before the official response to the Egyptian side.
Meanwhile, Egyptian media figure Hani Hathout stated on his Facebook account: 'The decision of the Competitions Committee is not final; the CAF Executive Committee has the final say, whether to accept or reject Egypt's request.'
It is worth noting that MAS Fes and RS Berkane will represent Morocco in the CAF Champions League, while Raja Casablanca will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup.
