Australian Ange Postecoglou, the new head coach of Al-Nassr, began his journey with the 'Al-Alami' with a surprise defeat to the reserve team of Portuguese club Benfica.

Al-Nassr lost to Benfica B 1-2 in the closed friendly match between them on Wednesday during Al-Alami's camp in Lisbon, Portugal.

Al-Nassr's only goal was scored by their player Abdulmalik Al-Jaber in the fourth minute of the match, before the Saudi team conceded two goals, turning their lead into a defeat.

The match was the first in which Postecoglou led Al-Nassr during the Portugal camp, after he took over the team following Portuguese Jorge Jesus, who left his position after the end of last season.

The Australian coach was keen to try many substitute and young players, in the absence of international stars after their participation with their national teams in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Al-Alami will play their next friendly against Spanish side Merida on July 28, then face Portuguese side Estrela Amadora on August 1, before concluding the camp with a match against Spanish side Almeria on August 4.

Al-Nassr, under Postecoglou, aims to defend the Saudi League title, which they won under former Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, after a 7-year absence.

Al-Alami will also return to compete in the AFC Champions League Elite, after missing it last season, as they participated in the second-tier tournament and reached the final before losing to Japan's Gamba Osaka.
