On November 3, 1992, Donovan René Léon, the new goalkeeper of Abha first football team, was born in Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana, before embarking on a journey that spanned more than 15 years in French stadiums, transforming from a boy from South America into one of the most iconic names in Auxerre's modern history. The 33-year-old goalkeeper stands 1.87 meters tall and weighs 94 kg, and plays with his right foot. Léon took his first steps in 1999 at club 'BCSC Cayenne' in his hometown, staying with them until 2007, before moving to France and joining the Bretigny training center, one of the well-known stations for supplying talent to French clubs, where he caught the attention of Auxerre officials, who brought him into the club's academy in 2009, when he was 16 years old. The Guianese goalkeeper needed only two seasons in Auxerre's academy before reaching the first team, making his professional debut on August 6, 2011 against Montpellier in Ligue 1. Léon gradually increased his appearances with Auxerre during the initial period, before establishing himself as a team option, culminating in playing in the 2015 French Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain, where Auxerre lost 1-0 at the Stade de France. Léon left Auxerre in summer 2015 moving to Brest on a free transfer, and spent five seasons there, moving between the first team and reserves, gaining additional experience in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, and was part of the group that brought Brest back to Ligue 1 in 2019, before his tenure with the club ended in summer 2020. In June 2020, the goalkeeper returned to Auxerre again, beginning the most prominent phase of his career, as he became one of the team's pillars and contributed to its promotion to Ligue 1 in 2022, after playing a decisive role against Saint-Étienne in the promotion playoff, saving a penalty from Denis Bouanga, granting his club a return ticket to the top flight. Despite Auxerre being relegated again, Léon maintained his position and led them to an immediate return in the 2023-2024 season, when he played 37 matches in Ligue 2, totaling 3,330 minutes, and contributed to the team winning the title, before being named among the nominees for the Team of the Season at the French Professional Players' Union awards. The goalkeeper continued his presence in Ligue 1 during the 2024-2025 season, playing 32 matches, keeping nine clean sheets, and did not limit himself to a defensive role, having assisted two goals for his teammates. During the past season, Léon played 29 matches in Ligue 1, totaling 2,463 minutes, kept clean sheets in eight matches, and was among the league's top goalkeepers in saves, with a save success rate of over 72% during the season phases. Léon's tally with Auxerre across his two spells reached 252 matches in various competitions, making him one of the club's most capped goalkeepers in the modern era. Internationally, Léon chose to represent the French Guiana national team, playing 37 matches for them, and participated in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2017, which saw his country's first appearance in the tournament, and he stood out with a remarkable save against Honduras, which was chosen as the best save of the match. The French goalkeeper is embarking on his first experience outside his country through Abha, after signing a free transfer deal for one season with an option to extend.
