The Spanish Football League has celebrated the dominance of graduates of its club academies in the Spain squad that won the 2026 World Cup held in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The league said in a statement: '25 out of 26 players who won the World Cup in New Jersey were formed in the academies of league clubs.' It added that goalkeeper David Raya is the only member of the Spain national team squad not from Spanish club academies, as he moved to England at the age of 16. The league attributed this to a model based on 'a competitive environment that encourages players to compete from an early age, as a young player in Spain can reach adulthood after playing around 500 official matches during his formative stages.' Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final after extra time, winning the title for the second time after their success in 2010 in South Africa. With this, Spain capped off their strong tournament campaign in which they conceded only one goal, defeating teams such as Portugal, Belgium and France.
