Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from international football after Algeria failed to overcome Switzerland, exiting the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32.

Mahrez said in brief remarks after the match: "Maybe this match was within reach, we conceded two goals after several mistakes, and at this level we will pay the price immediately."

Asked whether this was his last World Cup appearance, the 35-year-old player said: "This is my last appearance with the national team, this was my last match."

Mahrez played 119 matches for the Greens, scoring 40 goals, and was one of the standout stars of the golden generation that won the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2019 in Egypt.
