Musk: AI will surpass collective human intelligence within 5 years
Billionaire Elon Musk predicted that the world will witness an unprecedented leap in AI capabilities in the coming years, stating that the technology will surpass the intelligence of all humans combined.
American billionaire Elon Musk predicted that the world will witness an unprecedented leap in AI capabilities in the next few years, considering that this technology will surpass collective human intelligence within 5 years, while most physical and mental jobs could become automated within a decade, according to British magazine The Economist.
AI superiority and economic changes
The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla said that AI evokes mixed feelings of excitement and fear in him, but he believes its development trajectory has become unstoppable.
He predicted that AI systems will surpass the total mental capabilities of all humans within 5 years, while humanoid robots will take over most physical jobs within 10 years, and AI systems will accomplish most intellectual tasks.
Musk believes this transformation could lead to an era of unprecedented economic abundance, where the importance of money declines compared to the present, and deflation becomes the greatest global challenge. During the transition period, he suggested that governments may have to provide a universal high income to citizens.
Call for US-China cooperation
Regarding competition between the United States and China, Musk called for creating a mutual oversight mechanism that allows leading AI laboratories in both countries to review new models a week or two before their official launch, in order to identify potential risks and notify governments before they reach users.
He also expressed willingness to set aside his long-standing dispute with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman if it serves the safe development of AI.
Musk argued that imposing restrictions on Chinese AI models will not slow Beijing's progress, noting that China has great opportunities to lead in this field due to its vast energy resources and extensive capabilities in robot manufacturing, as well as its progress in developing advanced domestic chip-making equipment.
He concluded by saying that the pace of AI development is accelerating day by day, and the available option for humanity is to adapt to this transformation and prepare for it.
