Meta has announced a new update for the WhatsApp app on iPad, allowing users to create a new account directly from the tablet without needing to link it to a smartphone beforehand — a long-awaited step since the app's launch on iPad in 2025.

This update is part of a package of new features that include improving the CarPlay experience, adding tools for handling PDF files, as well as making it easier to share music via "Status".

Creating a WhatsApp Account Directly from iPad

Since the launch of the WhatsApp app on iPad, users have been forced to rely on the Linked Devices system, meaning they had to set up the account on a phone first, then link the tablet to it.

But now, users can create a new account, complete the registration process, and start using the app directly from an iPad without needing a primary phone to set up the account, according to a report published by AppleInsider and reviewed by Al Arabiya Business.

Despite this change, Meta clarified that the registration process still requires a valid phone number to receive a one-time verification code (OTP). After registration, the account works independently on the iPad, rather than being considered a companion device to a primary phone.

New Improvements for CarPlay and Android Auto

Meta has also expanded WhatsApp's capabilities inside cars by updating the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces.

With the new update, users will be able to:

- Listen to messages and reply using voice commands.

- Make and receive calls via WhatsApp.

- View call history.

- Quick access to favorite contacts through the car screen.

Meta did not disclose the minimum system versions or the cars and infotainment systems that will support these new features.

Better Support for PDF Files

The company also added preliminary support for handling PDF files via Adobe Acrobat on WhatsApp Web and Desktop.

Users will be able to open PDF files directly within chats without needing to download them first, with the ability to highlight text and add annotations inside the file.

Sharing Songs in Status

Among the new features is also the ability to share songs from Apple Music and Spotify directly to WhatsApp Status, allowing friends and contacts to see what the user is listening to.

Meta confirmed that the rollout of these features began on July 22, but did not provide a precise timeline for them to reach all devices or markets worldwide.
