Four Palestinians and an Israeli were killed on Friday in the northern occupied West Bank, according to AFP.

The Palestinian Health Ministry announced the deaths of four Palestinians and injuries to four others, three of them serious, from gunfire in the village of Tel.

For its part, the Israeli army said that Israeli civilians were targeted before Israeli forces responded by firing at the attackers.

An Israeli around 30 years old was killed, and two others around 20 years old were wounded by gunfire and evacuated by helicopter, one in serious condition, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service.

An AFP journalist said checkpoints were set up at the scene, and the Israeli army said it fired at the attackers as they fled.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed in a statement from his office that his government would act 'firmly against terrorists and their inciters'.

He clarified that he would hold a meeting with security officials to 'discuss ways to respond to the deadly attack'.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called on the army to act with an 'iron fist' against 'the village of murderers and its surroundings,' without providing further details.

Violence in the occupied West Bank has escalated since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023.

Israeli army prepares for large-scale military operation

The Israeli army announced on Friday its readiness to carry out a large-scale 'counter-terrorism' operation in the occupied West Bank, following the killing of an Israeli and four Palestinians in the area.

The army said in a statement: 'Following the terrorist attack that occurred earlier today in the Tel area, IDF soldiers are preparing to carry out a large-scale counter-terrorism operation in this area.' It added that it postponed soldiers' leave across the country and deployed forces in the area.
