5.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southeastern Turkey, No Casualties Reported
A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck several provinces in southeastern Turkey on Saturday morning, without causing casualties or material damage, according to an official statement by the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
The statement said the quake occurred at 6:20 a.m. local time (4:20 GMT), with its epicenter in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province, and its effects extended to the provinces of Malatya, Elazığ, Adıyaman, Tunceli, and Şanlıurfa.
The statement confirmed that no negative situations were reported following the earthquake, noting that field teams immediately continued their work.
Turkish Minister of Environment and Urban Planning Murat Kurum said, "We have not observed any negative developments, but we are evaluating all incoming reports."
This tremor comes in a region still recovering from the devastating earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey in February 2023, which killed more than 53,000 people and destroyed several cities in the area.
