(CNN)-- The work of the inaugural session of the Syrian People's Assembly began on Sunday, attended by transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa, for the first time since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Al-Sharaa said in his speech before the council: "Syria today is writing a new history that expresses its civilization, values, and heritage, and let us together make the history of modern Syria," according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Al-Sharaa added: "Humanity, since its inception, has been searching for the optimal way to organize people's politics and find the best ways to manage their affairs and achieve their interests," noting that "there is no better way than bringing opinions closer and expanding consultation to achieve benefit, and that acceptance and satisfaction are great matters in driving away division and rejecting discord."
He continued: "I invite you to make this council a model of responsibility and efficiency, and to contribute to establishing a culture of dialogue, the rule of law, and respect for institutions."
Al-Sharaa considered that "what years of tyranny, war, and destruction have left on people, infrastructure, and the economy requires prioritizing the national interest and working with a team spirit."
On July 1 of this month, the interim Syrian president issued a decree with the names of the members of the People's Assembly (207 out of a total of 210).
There are 70 members chosen by al-Sharaa, in addition to 137 who succeeded in indirect elections.
The transitional parliament has limited powers, and the government is not required to obtain its confidence, while it can propose and approve laws. Its term is 30 months, renewable.
