Jorge Rodríguez, President of the Venezuelan Parliament, announced a new provisional toll of the two consecutive earthquakes that struck the north of the country on June 24, reaching 5,208 deaths after recording about a hundred additional deaths in the past 24 hours.
The official toll announced on Saturday had indicated 5,119 deaths, while the number of injured remained at 16,740 without change.
The two earthquakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck northern Venezuela 39 seconds apart, with the coastal state of La Guaira near the capital Caracas being the hardest hit by the two tremors.
Rescue teams, assisted by volunteers, continue search operations among the rubble in the affected areas, while the Venezuelan authorities have not yet announced an official figure for the number of missing.
