US President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States will likely take control of the Strait of Hormuz, and that it should be compensated for managing this important waterway.

In a telephone interview with 'Fox & Friends' on Fox News, he added: 'We will control the strait, and perhaps we will manage it. We will become the protector of the strait. Maybe we will be called the guardian angel of the strait. And we should be compensated for that.'

Trump touched on the memorandum of understanding with Iran, saying: 'We had an agreement and they violated it.'

Earlier Monday, Iran's Foreign Ministry said it is seeking a joint mechanism with Oman regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz, accusing US pressures of hindering these efforts.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei explained that Tehran will not implement its obligations under the memorandum of understanding with Washington unless the other party fulfills its commitments.
