Ralph Boisa, one of the passengers on the boat used for scattering the ashes, said that one of the families chose to scatter the ashes of Maria, the adopted daughter of a family member who committed suicide in 2016, in the cold waters of Alcatraz in honor of her memory, as she loved surfing, according to Russia Today.

The three-story recreational boat capsized during the trip launched for this purpose, after being hit by a wave between Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge, causing it to sink.

The incident resulted in the death of Cliff Boisa, Ralph's brother, and three people remain missing, after authorities suspended search operations at sunset Wednesday.

According to the US Coast Guard, the boat, which was carrying 20 family members and was driven by John Boisa, lost balance after hitting the wave and capsized before sinking completely.

The missing are Carol, the sister of the Boisa brothers, Jackie, Cliff's wife, and a friend of Maria, while the Boisa family reported that authorities recovered a woman's body.
