Court records showed Tuesday that a person was arrested in Utah on charges of stabbing a Muslim man multiple times, and the records stated that the suspect targeted the victim because of his religion.

Police explained that the suspect told them he "wanted to kill Muslims" and noted that he would pose a "serious danger to society if released, given his violent behavior... ideologies, and premeditation of actions that would cause a large number of casualties."

The incident occurred inside the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah, on Monday.

Police stated in a sworn affidavit that the victim "suffered multiple stab wounds throughout his body and was bleeding profusely."

Authorities said bystanders were able to restrain the suspect before law enforcement arrived at the scene.

The suspect, Peter Michael Larsen (48), was detained at Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted murder and possession of a prohibited dangerous weapon, according to jail records Tuesday.

The victim was a Muslim man working at a kiosk.
