Israeli far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has made the firing of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara a condition for his party to join any coalition formed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the upcoming elections.

According to the Hebrew newspaper Maariv on Thursday, Ben-Gvir issued what it described as a 'final warning' to Netanyahu, asserting that Baharav-Miara remaining in her post is incompatible with his party, Jewish Power, joining the next coalition.

General elections in Israel are scheduled for October 27, following the dissolution of the Knesset (parliament) on July 17, after completing a full term for the first time since 1988.

Ben-Gvir sent a letter to Netanyahu last week, stating that the immediate dismissal of Baharav-Miara and the appointment of a replacement would be a 'basic condition' for his party to enter the next government, according to the same source.

According to the newspaper, he demanded the appointment of an attorney general who 'does not rebel against the elected level and works to assist the government in implementing its policy, instead of obstructing it and its members,' in his words.

He also demanded the formation of an investigative committee with criminal powers to investigate actions taken by Baharav-Miara and her office staff, threatening not to join the government if his demands are not met.

Ben-Gvir said he had previously asked Netanyahu to dismiss Baharav-Miara at the beginning of the government's term in 2022, but Netanyahu replied that he was a 'young minister' and that things 'are not run that way.'

He added that he fears Netanyahu might, after the elections, form a broad government including parties that disagree with his party on judicial, security, and settlement issues, similar to previous governments that included figures from the political center.

Relations between Ben-Gvir and Baharav-Miara have been marked by ongoing disputes over his authority in police management, security appointments, and the extent of his involvement in law enforcement agencies. The attorney general has supported lawsuits seeking his dismissal.

Netanyahu's government previously attempted to dismiss Baharav-Miara, but the Israeli Supreme Court nullified the dismissal proceedings in December 2025 due to procedural violations and failure to follow the established legal mechanism.

Ben-Gvir is one of the staunchest supporters of the genocide war that Israel launched on the Gaza Strip on October 8, 2023, which lasted two years, killing more than 73,000 Palestinians and wounding over 173,000, most of them women and children.

He also presented a bill through his party that was recently passed by the Knesset for the execution of Palestinian prisoners, adding to his assaults on more than 9,600 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
