Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar nominated chess legend Judit Polgar for the position of head of state, but she refused the offer.

Polgar wrote on her Facebook page that she appreciates the prime minister's initiative to nominate her as an independent and non-partisan candidate, adding: "But at the same time, I do not feel that I have the strength to bear the historical responsibility of uniting a divided nation."

Magyar had nominated Polgar (49 years old) for the highest office in the state on Sunday, and wrote on his Facebook page that her successes came "not thanks to relationships or political connections, but thanks to her exceptional talent."

The position of head of state became vacant in Hungary last week, after a constitutional amendment took effect that ended the term of former President Tamas Sulyok.

Sulyok was appointed during the term of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who belongs to the populist right, but his continuation in office became impossible for the new government after the landslide victory of the center-right party 'Tisza' led by Magyar in the April 12 elections.

Parliament Speaker Agnes Forsthofer, a member of the 'Tisza' party, assumed the duties of head of state on an interim basis as of Monday, and the parliament must elect a new president within 30 days.

Polgar is the greatest female chess player in the history of the game, and she has previously competed in men's tournaments and achieved victories against legends of the game such as Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov.
