(CNN) -- The Iranian Revolutionary Guard cited a phrase from the Quran, warning that whoever attacks Iran will face the same force, as it struck US allies in the Middle East following a new wave of American attacks.

In recent days, the region has seen an exchange of strikes between the US and Iran focused on control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with no sign of de-escalation.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to Iran's official state broadcaster IRIB, said that "given the lack of an international institution to prevent the brutality of the US military, we have no choice but to comply with the Quranic command: (Whoever attacks you, attack him in the same manner as he attacked you)."

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard went on to issue a warning to neighboring Gulf states, saying that therefore, "countries that host occupying US forces and have placed their territory at the disposal of these criminal invaders to launch attacks against Iran should be prepared to receive a similar response."
