(CNN)-- The spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Baghai, told reporters that Iran will not implement the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States last month after Washington "violated it."

And Ismail Baghai said on Monday, repeating statements by Iranian officials over the weekend: "The other party has not only failed to implement the memorandum, but has violated it and acted contrary to its text and spirit."

Baghai added: "We have announced on our part that we will not implement it. This is completely clear," and indicated that the agreement, which "protected" Iran's interests, includes mutual commitments with Washington, and as soon as the United States "violated" these commitments, Tehran's implementation of it became "practically impossible."

The spokesperson continued: "I believe that, regardless of the chosen wording, the current state of this document is clear."

In response to questions about Iran's reaction if Washington requests further negotiations, after Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei described US President Donald Trump's signature as "worthless and unreliable," Baghai pointed to the possibility of talks. He said that just as war works to "protect" Iran's interests, negotiations are another means to achieve the same goal.

He added that the mediators have presented other proposals to Tehran despite the hostilities, but he refrained from providing details. Qatar and Pakistan have played a mediating role between Iran and the United States.
