Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency announced on Tuesday that a power plant on Kish Island in the Gulf was damaged as a result of a US attack that occurred in the early morning hours.

The strike comes amid escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran in the Gulf region.

Fars reported that a projectile exploded near the plant, while the Kish Water and Power Engineering Company described the incident as a US raid.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted airstrikes last night. CNN has contacted CENTCOM for comment.

Fars news agency reported that some generating units may be temporarily shut down for necessary maintenance.

While Kish Island is primarily known as a tourist destination for Iranian tourists, it also hosts military infrastructure including naval and radar facilities, as well as aviation facilities that support Iran's missile and drone programs.

Kish Island is considered a sensitive area due to its dual civilian and military use, housing naval and radar facilities as well as supporting missile and drone programs. A power plant outage could affect both civilian and military activities on the island. Semi-official Iranian media outlets like Fars often report attacks before official announcements.
