Istanbul / Anadolu
A Palestinian youth was injured by Israeli fire on Thursday evening while at the Shuafat camp checkpoint in northeast occupied Jerusalem.
This incident comes amid rising tensions in the West Bank and Jerusalem since the outbreak of the war on Gaza in October 2023.
The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that an Israeli force opened fire at a young man at the Shuafat camp checkpoint.
It added that the young man was shot 'while at the checkpoint, without the nature of his injury or his identity being clear yet,' without providing details on his fate.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian governorate of Jerusalem published a short video of the moment of shooting at a young man riding a bicycle.
For its part, Israel's Channel 12 claimed that border guards at the Shuafat crossing spotted a person with suspicious behavior upon his arrival.
Meanwhile, the newspaper Ma'ariv indicated that 'the soldiers suspected this person - not yet identified - and ordered him to comply with orders but he did not comply,' and that 'as a result, he was shot in the leg, and arrest procedures were carried out, while no injuries were recorded among our forces.'
No immediate comment was issued by the Israeli army regarding the incident, and no official information was available on the health condition of the injured person.
In a related context, WAFA explained that Israeli forces stormed the town of Bir Nabala northwest of Jerusalem and fired tear gas canisters in its streets.
Earlier on Thursday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced the killing of 3 Palestinians, including a child, by Israeli army fire and the detention of their bodies near Nablus and Jenin in the northern West Bank.
The West Bank has seen an escalation in Israeli raids and arrests since the start of the war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, as attacks by the Israeli army and settlers have resulted in the killing of 1,182 Palestinians, while about 24,000 Palestinians have been arrested, according to official Palestinian data published last Monday.
These injuries come in the context of a wide Israeli escalation in the West Bank coinciding with the war on Gaza. According to Palestinian statistics, the death toll in the West Bank since October has reached 1,182 people, while the number of detainees has exceeded 24,000. Sporadic clashes erupted in several towns, most notably Bir Nabala, which the army stormed and fired gas. No official comment has yet been issued by the Israeli army regarding the Shuafat incident.
