Facebook and Instagram platforms experienced a widespread technical outage on Sunday, after thousands of users around the world were surprised by a sudden service interruption, including login failures, homepage update stoppages, and repeated error messages on both platforms.
Reports began escalating from the early morning hours, with data from outage monitoring site Downdetector showing a sharp increase in complaints within minutes, while problems extended to several services of Meta, the company that owns both platforms.
Error Messages and Sudden Logouts
Users of the Facebook web version encountered a message stating that the account 'is temporarily unavailable due to a site issue,' while login attempts failed for a large number of users, and others experienced automatic logouts from their accounts on mobile apps and the website.
The outages extended to the main feeds on Facebook and Instagram, as posts stopped updating or loaded very slowly, while users reported disruption of message sending via Messenger and difficulty loading photos and videos, making the daily experience on both platforms almost non-functional.
Meta's Silence Adds to Mystery
As of the time of writing, Meta has not issued any official statement explaining the cause of the outage or setting a timeline for full service restoration.
Although the company's business-oriented service status dashboards showed that some APIs and commercial services continued to operate, user-facing platforms continued to experience significant disruptions, prompting millions of users to turn to platform X to exchange information and follow the latest developments regarding the sudden outage.
