Pentagon delays disclosure of US troop injuries in Iran war
Sources told CNN that the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) is delaying the announcement of injuries to US forces during the war with Iran, avoiding public disclosure of the repercussions of Iranian attacks, while only publishing injury data through a military system that may be updated days or weeks later, with the aim of protecting US soldiers in the region.
According to sources, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) no longer regularly publishes details of non-fatal injuries, making the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) the main official source for injury numbers among US forces.
A Pentagon official also said that documenting injuries may take several days or even weeks, due to medical evaluation and review procedures, stressing that the database is 'regularly updated'.
Data reviewed by CNN showed one new death and 14 soldiers injured since the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran in mid-June, before the database was later updated to add four deaths and 20 new injuries.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell justified the delay in publishing information on non-fatal injuries, saying that immediate disclosure could give US adversaries information that might endanger more than 50,000 US troops deployed in the Middle East.
He added that the Department and Central Command continue to provide updates on US operations and strikes, referring to statements by President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as sources that clarify the objectives of US operations.
These developments come after an Iranian missile attack targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, resulting in the deaths of two US soldiers and the loss of another, in addition to the death of a third soldier in northern Iraq in an incident related to the downing of an Iranian drone.
The US Department of Defense revealed on Monday that nearly 100 US soldiers have suffered injuries of varying severity since July 7.
