Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Monday that Iran is facing a 'comprehensive' war waged by the United States, warning of its repercussions on the country's economy.

The Iranian presidency website quoted Pezeshkian as saying: 'The truth is that the Islamic Republic of Iran today faces a comprehensive war' waged by the United States, adding that Iranians must 'accept the natural consequences of this resistance.'

The Iranian president said during a meeting in Tehran with officials from the judiciary that 'the main battlefield today is the economy and the livelihoods of the people.'

Pezeshkian warned that 'if economic pressures lead to social discontent (...) the broad popular support for the state may weaken.'

In June, inflation in Iran accelerated sharply under the impact of the war, reaching record levels approaching a year-on-year increase of 90 percent. July data have not yet been released.

In late December, a protest movement that initially began as an objection to the high cost of living quickly turned into widespread anti-government demonstrations, culminating on January 8 and 9.

Iranian authorities announced the deaths of more than 3,000 people, attributing the violence to what they described as 'terrorist acts' orchestrated by the United States and Israel.

In contrast, non-governmental organizations based outside Iran said the crackdown resulted in the deaths of thousands of people.
