US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed on Thursday that Saudi Arabia is an 'important strategic partner' for the United States. He indicated that concluding a civilian nuclear energy cooperation agreement with it is logical, explaining that any such agreement would include safeguards.

Rubio told reporters on the sidelines of a foreign ministers' meeting in Manila that the United States is constantly looking for opportunities to conclude civilian nuclear agreements, explaining that any nuclear agreements would be presented to the US Congress.

On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia and the United States signed an agreement for cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, a step that establishes a long-term partnership between the two countries and supports the Kingdom's efforts to diversify energy sources, develop advanced technologies, and enhance investment opportunities.

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy said the agreement aims to enhance bilateral cooperation and support the exchange of expertise, knowledge, and technologies, contributing to the development of peaceful uses of nuclear energy in accordance with the highest international standards for nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation.

The agreement represents an extension of existing cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector and reflects their shared vision to expand partnership in energy, future technologies, and sustainable development.

Tehran is not ready to conclude an agreement

Regarding Iran, Rubio said that Tehran is 'likely not ready' currently to conclude an agreement, but he indicated the possibility of a change in its position within days.

He added that Washington has committed to the agreement on its part, considering that Iran may reconsider its position.

Rubio affirmed that US President Donald Trump's policy is based on the principle of 'an eye for an eye,' warning that Iran will pay a 'heavy price' if it continues to escalate.

He indicated that Tehran, despite what he described as 'bravado,' 'is under great pressure and will continue to face the consequences.'

Rubio stressed that the US goal is to ensure Iran is free of nuclear weapons, and he accused it of 'luring' the Houthis in Yemen to launch attacks in the Red Sea, referring to tensions related to navigation security in the region.
