New York - Agencies:

The United Nations affirmed that the opportunities available to Syria are real, provided that inclusive, accountable institutions capable of meeting the needs of all Syrians are built.

This came in a briefing delivered by the Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria, Claudio Cordone, via video link, before a meeting of the UN Security Council on developments in Syria. Cordone pointed to a number of institutional developments, including the recent appointment by Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara of members of the Supreme Constitutional Court, and the start of the new People's Assembly sessions this month.

He explained that the formation of the legislative and judicial institutions represents two prominent milestones in the transitional process set by the constitutional declaration issued in March 2025. The UN official stressed that consolidating the independence of the legislative and judicial institutions from the executive authority is a key element in building a credible, inclusive, and sustainable transitional process. On another matter, Cordone expressed the United Nations' deep concern over the continued Israeli military activity in southern Syria, noting ongoing operations of incursions, shelling, drone flights, as well as the imposition of restrictions on civilian movement in Quneitra and Daraa governorates.

He explained that among the concerning developments were the incidents of June 27 and 28, where reports indicated two people were killed by fire from elements of the Israeli occupation army east of the ceasefire line, before a ground incursion was carried out in the village of Abidin.

He added that the operation led to the displacement of a number of civilians, followed by the deployment of Syrian security forces after the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from the area.
