Data from the General Authority for Statistics showed on Thursday that the industrial production index (IPI) fell by 18.7% in May 2026 compared to the same month of the previous year, due to a decline in mining and quarrying activities and manufacturing, while the index recorded a monthly increase of 3.2%.

Mining and quarrying activities

In May 2026, the sub-index for mining and quarrying activities decreased by 28.6% year-on-year, while on a monthly basis it increased by 3.9%.

Manufacturing activities

Data from the General Authority for Statistics indicated that the sub-index for manufacturing activities fell by 6.2% year-on-year, affected by a 16.7% decline in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products and a 4% decline in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products.

On a monthly basis, preliminary results for the manufacturing sub-index show a 1.6% increase, driven by a 5.9% rise in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products and a 0.2% rise in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products.

Electricity, gas, and waste management supplies

The sub-index for electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply decreased by 1.4%, while the sub-index for water supply, sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities increased by 5.7% compared to May of the previous year. Compared to April 2026, the sub-index for electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply rose by 15.8%, and the sub-index for water supply, sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities rose by 0.2%.

Industrial production by main economic activities

The index for oil activities fell by 26.3% in May 2026 compared to the same month last year, while the index for non-oil activities decreased by 0.6%. The results also indicate a 4.3% increase in the index for oil activities and a 1.3% increase in the index for non-oil activities compared to April 2026.
