Cardiologist Dr. Francesco Lo Monaco warned against ignoring a number of symptoms that may indicate complications of high blood pressure, stressing that the disease is known as the 'silent killer' because it often does not cause clear symptoms until damage to the heart and blood vessels has occurred.
According to the Mirror, the doctor explained that millions of people put their hearts under constant pressure due to seemingly harmless daily habits, such as not controlling blood pressure, neglecting treatment for sleep apnea, weight gain, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of physical activity.
He pointed out that the continuation of these factors for long periods may lead to cardiomyopathy or gradual enlargement of the heart, a condition that may develop silently for years before any clear symptoms appear.
Lo Monaco said: 'Many believe they will feel immediately if they have a heart problem, but the reality is that changes may occur slowly over years, especially if blood pressure is not under control.'
5 Symptoms That Should Not Be Ignored
The cardiologist confirmed that there are five signs that require seeing a doctor as soon as possible: shortness or difficulty breathing, swelling of the feet or ankles, chest pain, palpitations or irregular heartbeat, feeling severe or unexplained fatigue.
He explained that these symptoms may indicate that the heart is affected due to high blood pressure or other heart diseases, and require urgent medical evaluation.
Why is it called the 'silent killer'?
The doctor explained that high blood pressure forces the heart to pump blood harder to overcome vascular resistance, which initially leads to thickening of the heart muscle, then may weaken its efficiency over time, increasing the risk of heart failure, arrhythmias, and cardiac and cerebral strokes.
Estimates from the British National Health Service also indicate that millions of people may suffer from high blood pressure without knowing it, due to the absence of symptoms in the early stages.
5 Daily Habits That Harm the Heart
Lo Monaco warned against five common habits that increase the burden on the heart: not controlling high blood pressure, neglecting treatment for sleep apnea, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity and weight gain, lack of movement and physical inactivity.
He added that the good news is that most of these factors can be controlled by maintaining blood pressure within normal levels, treating sleep disorders, achieving a healthy weight, regularly exercising, and reducing alcohol consumption—steps that help reduce pressure on the heart and prevent long-term complications.
