(CNN)-- The US military and a Syrian official denied Iranian claims regarding an attack on a US base in southern Syria on Thursday evening.
In its first comment on these claims, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on platform "X," formerly Twitter: "Claim: Iranian forces claim they attacked the al-Tanf base in Syria, and killed or captured US soldiers during the operation. False. Fact: No US soldier was killed or captured in the area recently."
A Syrian army officer deployed in the area near the Syrian border with Iraq and Jordan also told CNN: "These reports are false, no bombing occurred on Thursday, and there are no US forces at the base."
Without providing evidence, Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced that it had targeted the US base in al-Tanf, in what it said was a response to US strikes that resulted in casualties in the city of Iranshahr, according to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency.
US military forces had left the strategic al-Tanf garrison in February, after more than a decade of presence there, as part of a broader redeployment aimed at reducing the US military presence in Syria, according to a statement by US Central Command at the time.
