During handling of previously fallen ammunition.. US soldier killed in Iraq
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Sunday the death of one of the US soldiers in northern Iraq on Saturday while handling unexploded ordnance that had fallen earlier.
CENTCOM explained that a US soldier was killed in northern Iraq 'while performing his duties on July 18, during a controlled detonation operation of unexploded ordnance resulting from an Iranian one-way attack drone that had fallen earlier.'
It added: 'A second soldier was injured and is still receiving medical treatment for a minor injury.'
CENTCOM also indicated that after announcing the death of two US soldiers and the loss of a third in Jordan following an Iranian attack that occurred on July 17, and after a careful search, 'US military personnel found unidentified remains at the site earlier today (Sunday). A verification process is currently underway to identify the remains.'
CENTCOM stated that it is withholding any additional information, including the identities of the missing and deceased soldiers, 'out of respect for the privacy of their families during the notification process.'
