The British Ministry of Defense revealed that Russian forces conducted a military exercise with live ammunition about 40 nautical miles off the coast of England.

A spokesperson for the British Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday that a Russian warship conducted a live-fire training exercise in the English Channel on Monday off the city of Plymouth in southwestern England.

According to the British Ministry of Defense, the Russian ship issued a warning to the British ship HMS Tyne, which was in the area, about its intention to conduct live-fire drills and asked it to move to a safer distance.

The British Ministry of Defense spokesperson explained that the Royal Navy monitored the exercise and continues to closely track the Russian ship's activity, and is 'on standby to protect the national security of the United Kingdom.'

The British newspaper The Guardian reported that the rare Russian exercise lasted about 30 minutes.

The maneuver took place concurrently with the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham taking office, amid rising tensions between Britain and Russia in the English Channel and Northern European waters.

Exemplifying this tension, British forces intercepted a Russian oil tanker from the 'shadow fleet' in the English Channel in mid-June, suspected of transporting Russian oil in a way that Britain considers 'illegal.'

Two days later, a sailing vessel registered in the United Kingdom reported being fired upon with warning shots from a Russian warship while sailing south of the Isle of Wight, outside British territorial waters. The Russian Defense Ministry said the ship approached a Russian frigate 'dangerously,' but London described the incident as a Russian 'reckless' act.
