The Egyptian Football Association said on Thursday it had submitted a request to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to increase the number of clubs participating in continental competitions.

The CAF Champions League, the continent's premier club competition, features 62 teams from 50 local associations. The top 12 associations in the rankings get two slots in the tournament, while each remaining local association gets one slot, and the same applies to the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Egyptian FA said in a statement: "Hani Abou Rida (the association's president) submitted a formal request to the African Football Confederation, asking for an increase in the number of clubs participating in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, by granting each member association an additional slot, with these slots to be distributed according to the classification criteria and regulations approved by CAF."

Egypt is represented in the CAF Champions League by league champions Zamalek and runners-up Pyramids, while Al Ahly, the record winner of the CAF Champions League, plays in the Confederation Cup after finishing third. The Egyptian FA has not yet determined the other club competing in the Confederation Cup.
