Fashion designer replaces dresses with body bags... What's the reason?
Dresses have disappeared, replaced by body bags produced by the workshop of fashion designer Efrein Mogollón for rescue teams responding to two devastating earthquakes in Venezuela.
Two massive earthquakes struck the Venezuelan coast on June 24, killing more than 3,500 people. Nearly all supplies for response teams ran out, including body bags. So Mogollón completely emptied his workshop, where mannequins were pushed aside, rolls of pink and red fabrics were lined against the wall, and seamstresses began cutting black plastic covers.
Mary Castillo, one of the seamstresses, described this work as very sad, saying: 'But we have to continue working and make an effort to move forward... I admit that we make these bags while feeling intense pain.'
But one of the workshop's traditions continues: workers attach a small image of Christ to the zipper before finishing each bag. Mogollón himself helps deliver them to rescue teams in La Guaira, the area most affected by the two earthquakes.
Mogollón said they are doing extremely sensitive work, adding: 'We wished we didn't have to do it. But what keeps our hearts and souls alive is knowing that we are helping.'
