(CNN)--US President Donald Trump said Friday he does not believe China or Russia are supplying Iran with weapons, pointing to assurances he said he received from the leaders of both countries.

Trump wrote on Truth Social: 'President Xi (Jinping) told me during our recent meeting in Beijing that he will not, under any circumstances, provide or sell weapons to the Islamic Republic of Iran, and that includes Chinese companies.'

He added: 'Given the nature of our relationship, I believe him, especially since I am also doing him very big favors.'

Trump also said Russian President Vladimir Putin told him that Moscow will not sell weapons to Iran.

He wrote: 'So, two big countries often mentioned when talking about Iran are not involved, in my opinion, in that. And if they were, it would be very bad for them, and certainly not in their interest.'

Earlier this week, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said during a Senate hearing that China and Russia 'contribute, to varying degrees, to enabling some Iranian activities during the war.'

Hegseth added before the Senate Appropriations Committee: 'There are many ways to deter that... and the depth and scope of these means must remain confidential.'

He continued: 'But there are ways in which both countries contribute, to varying degrees, to enabling some of what Iran does.'
