US President Donald Trump warned both China and Russia on Friday against selling arms to Iran, saying he believes the assurances of Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin that they have not taken this step so far.

He said via his Truth Social network: 'Hence, the two main countries whose names are widely mentioned in the context of talks about Iran, I see that they are not involved. If they do, it would be very bad for them, and certainly not in their interest.'

He added: 'President (Chinese) Xi (Jinping) assured me during our recent meeting in Beijing that he will not provide or sell Iran weapons under any circumstances, and this includes Chinese companies.'
