US Army Targets Surroundings of Iran's Qeshm Island with Missiles
Iranian authorities announced on Thursday that the US military launched a missile attack targeting the surroundings of Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement carried by the semi-official Fars News Agency, Hormozgan Province in southern Iran said US forces targeted areas near Qeshm Island with missiles, and the statement did not provide details about the US attack.
Earlier on Thursday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that its forces launched strikes targeting coastal defense sites and cruise missiles on Iran's Greater Tunb Island, disputed with the UAE, during a wave lasting 90 minutes.
CENTCOM says the strikes aim to continue 'undermining Iran's ability to threaten sailors aboard commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.'
In response, Tehran has been retaliating for days by bombing what it says are US military installations in Arab countries including Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, while some of these countries have announced that the Iranian attacks resulted in civilian casualties and damage to civilian facilities.
On June 18 last, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding that included a ceasefire, and began negotiations mediated by Pakistan and Qatar to end the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28 last.
However, US President Donald Trump announced on July 8 of this month the end of the ceasefire against the backdrop of renewed escalation, after Iran attacked three ships a day earlier while they were crossing the Strait of Hormuz, claiming they did not adhere to the navigation route it had set, to which Washington responded by launching attacks on sites inside Iran.
Washington supports the passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz along a route different from that set by Iran, which Tehran rejects, affirming that it targets any ship that does not coordinate with it before crossing the strategic strait for global energy supplies.
