US President Donald Trump said Thursday that approval of the civil nuclear agreement being concluded between the US Department of Energy and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is conditional on Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords.

He added in a post on Truth Social that the program will not involve any enrichment of nuclear materials, stressing that the United States "does not oppose civilian nuclear facilities that are not based on enrichment."

He said: "The program, which is limited solely to non-military uses, such as the programs already in place in Iran and the UAE, and other countries, will be approved, but approval is absolutely conditional on Saudi Arabia joining the highly respected and successful Abraham Accords."

Agreement for Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation

Saudi Arabia and the United States announced Wednesday the signing of a cooperation agreement in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, enhancing bilateral cooperation in energy and advanced technology fields between the two countries.

The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that the governments of Saudi Arabia and the United States signed the cooperation agreement in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, within the framework of the strategic partnership between the two countries, building on what was announced during the visit of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to Washington last November regarding the completion of negotiations on cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and enhancing bilateral cooperation in energy and advanced technology fields.

The agreement, signed by Saudi Minister of Energy and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, aims to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and support the exchange of expertise, knowledge, and technologies, contributing to the development of joint cooperation in accordance with the highest international standards related to nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation, reflecting the shared vision of the two countries towards expanding cooperation in energy and future technology fields and supporting sustainable development.

"123 Agreement"

The US Department of Energy announced that Chris Wright and Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman signed a peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement, commonly known as the "123 Agreement," along with a bilateral agreement on nuclear safeguards, according to the department.

The US department said in a statement that "the two agreements establish the legal foundation for a partnership extending for decades, valued at billions of dollars, supporting a number of economic and strategic priorities, including nuclear non-proliferation."

It explained that "the 123 Agreement grants US companies broad opportunities to participate in the Saudi nuclear energy program, benefiting US industry, workers, and supply chains, and helping to meet Saudi Arabia's energy needs."

The US department noted that "the two agreements enhance the security of the United States and the region by committing to high standards in nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation, and also support US competitiveness in civilian nuclear energy technology."

According to the statement, the agreement is scheduled to be submitted to Congress for review.
