CENTCOM: US Soldier Killed in Ammunition Demolition in Northern Iraq Saturday
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a statement on Sunday the death of a US servicemember in northern Iraq during a demolition operation on Saturday of unexploded ordnance from an Iranian drone that had fallen earlier.
CENTCOM said in a statement: "A US servicemember was killed in northern Iraq while performing duties on July 18, during a controlled demolition of unexploded ordnance from an Iranian suicide drone... A second servicemember was also injured and is receiving medical treatment for minor injuries."
This brings the confirmed death toll of US servicemembers to 17 since the outbreak of the war between Iran, the United States, and Israel on February 28, while more than 430 US soldiers have been wounded in combat operations.
CENTCOM had announced on Saturday the deaths of two of its servicemembers and the loss of a third due to an Iranian strike on a site in Jordan on Friday.
The military command clarified in its statement on Sunday that "following a thorough search operation, US army personnel found unidentified remains at the site earlier today. A verification process is currently underway to identify the remains."
