(CNN)-- The British navy announced on Friday that it had received a report of an incident off the coast of Oman involving an oil tanker and military forces present in the area.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it had received a report 'of an incident involving a commercial vessel and military forces' about 100 nautical miles east of Oman's Duqm port.

The agency added: 'Reports indicate that the oil tanker was involved in skirmishes as part of ongoing military activities in the area.'

The agency did not provide further details, only stating that the source of the report was 'military authorities' and noting that the incident occurred on Thursday.

It remains unclear whether the unidentified vessel was intercepted as part of the renewed US naval blockade on ships using Iranian ports.

CNN is seeking comment from the US military.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Thursday that elements of the US Marine Corps from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit conducted a 'verification boarding' operation aboard the oil tanker M/T Wen Yao in the Gulf of Oman.

The Wen Yao is a sanctioned tanker, registered in Curaçao, and has been renamed Lan Jing.

The tanker's last reported position on Thursday was in the same area referenced by the UK Maritime Trade Operations in its incident report.
