Earthquake of magnitude 5 strikes southeastern Turkey
An earthquake of magnitude 5 struck several provinces in southeastern Turkey this morning (Saturday), according to a statement by the Turkish Disaster Management Authority, but did not cause any damage or casualties.
The authority's statement indicated 'no negative situation reported after the earthquake of magnitude 5 that occurred at 06:20 (04:20 GMT) in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province, and was felt by residents of Malatya, Elazig, Adiyaman, Tunceli, and Sanliurfa provinces.' It added, 'Our teams are continuing their work on the ground.'
Turkish Environment and Urban Planning Minister Murat Kurum said: 'We have not observed any negative developments, but we are evaluating all reports.'
It is noted that in 2023, a devastating earthquake struck southeastern Turkey, killing more than 53,000 people and destroying several cities in the region.
